Metabolism of sunscreens in various species

چکیده

In order to achieve the stated SPF (2 mg/cm2) of a sunscreen preparation, about 35 ml are needed for a whole-body application for adults. If it is applied at the recommended frequency, at least twice this amount could be applied during a day at the beach. During other periods, sunscreens may be applied to sun-exposed sites such as the face, hands and arms for extended periods or used daily in cosmetic preparations. Ideally, sunscreens should remain on the skin surface, so that they can be washed off, or should be bound only to the nonviable epidermis (stratum corneum). Relatively little is known about the percutaneous absorption and metabolism of sunscreens. Since they might be used daily throughout life, it is clearly important that any interactions that sunscreens may have within viable skin and systemically should be assessed. The percutaneous absorption of sunscreens has been studied in humans and animals in vivo. Ex-vivo techniques, in which viable excised skin is used as a membrane in a diffusion chamber and test material is collected in a receptor fluid, have also been used.

A review of sunscreens and moisturizers compounds drived from cyanobacteria

One of the most important functions of the skin is to protect against various stressors. Environmental stimuli such as UV and environmental pollution increase reactive oxygen species and cause wrinkles and skin aging. Skin aging is associated with decreased collagen production and decreased activity of enzymes involved in collagen structure. Moisturizing chemicals increase the skin's ability to...

Physical sunscreens: on the comeback trail.

Awareness of ultraviolet radiation-induced skin damage creates the need for the development of broad-spectrum, safe and cosmetically acceptable sunscreens. Being relatively inert, safe, stable and non-irritating, physical sunscreens are particularly useful for patients with sensitive skin who cannot tolerate chemical sunscreens. However, they form a thick visible pigment layer on the skin. To o...

Saving Your Students’ Skin. Undergraduate Experiments That Probe UV Protection by Sunscreens and Sunglasses

In recent years, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been linked to a number of human health problems, including sunburn, skin cancer, premature aging of the skin, cataracts, and immune suppression (1–3). At the same time, evidence of aerosol-induced damage to the earth’s primary UV filter, the ozone layer, has increased (4 ), and skin cancer rates have risen to more than 900,000 cases p...
